Management Approach

We live in a dynamic business environment, and we must be constantly responding to it. A large part of that response is to match our people with our needs. We are a for-profit organization and our personnel structure must support that goal. Changes in our personnel structure don't mean, however, that growth or other factors should diminish the culture we have worked to establish in this company.

BAE SYSTEMS Analytical Solutions doesn't make it a practice to post organization charts, nor make a "big deal" out of corporate positions. We live in and operate in an information society, populated for the most part by "knowledge workers." The information society is constantly evolving and changing and the knowledge workers must continue to constantly acquire new knowledge. Most knowledge is perishable and must be rapidly replaced with new knowledge if the knowledge worker is to remain effective.

Knowledge workers are different from workers that populated most of the industrial age companies. The rapid expansion of knowledge and the rate of change of knowledge in the information age has turned organizational management philosophy upside down. With knowledge workers, the organizational structure and leadership must draw knowledge from employees. The creative content of work has increased substantially - the creative content of leadership has therefore increased dramatically, In this environment, the knowledge of many must be leveraged by the few enablers in leadership positions. The organizational structure must promote interaction among employees; it must create and environment in which knowledge worker feels free to offer his or her knowledge as part of the solution for work challenges. As an employee, the knowledge you possess and the willingness you have to apply it to company challenges are what matter. Your span of influence, not your span of control, is most important.

The "Crucible"
"Crucible" is the most apt term for what we at BAE SYSTEMS Analytical Solutions are attempting to achieve in our management philosophy. It indicates that we are willing to experiment. It reflects our flexibility and willingness to tailor the organization to reach our goals as our business unit grows and the business environment changes. Our organizational crucible is intended to create an environment in which information age leaders will emerge and in which each knowledge worker can achieve his/her highest professional goals. Our leaders are like seed crystals in the crucible; they should serve as the catalyst for growth around them. If the crystal growth does not occur, the seed crystals melt back into the mixture and new seeds are selected.
Lines and boxes on an organizational chart tend to restrain the flow of information rather than enable that flow. That is why we have never stressed organization charts. We believe that this approach allows natural leaders to emerge. The designation of new positions recognizes this process and creates the "seed crystals" for our future growth. We expect other seed crystals to emerge. We believe our approach will allow the company to continue to grow, expand, and increase in profitability. This will provide our employees increased job satisfaction, new opportunities, financial rewards, and job security.

At BAE SYSTEMS Analytical Solutions, there are no spectators, we are all players.
